A key first-trimester screening at Fatima IVF Fertility and Women’s centre

WHAT IS AN NT SCAN?
The Nuchal Translucency (NT) scan is a specialized ultrasound performed between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy. It measures the clear (translucent) space in the tissue at the back of the baby’s neck. A larger-than-normal NT measurement can be an early indicator of
chromosomal abnormalities, such as:
 Down syndrome (Trisomy 21)
 Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18)
 Patau syndrome (Trisomy 13)
 Certain congenital heart defects

Early Detection, Better Decisions

NT scan is part of the first-trimester combined screening, often done alongside:
A blood test to measure pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A
(PAPP-A)
Free beta-hCG levels
Together, these offer a risk assessment of genetic disorders early in pregnancy,
allowing for:
 Early intervention options
 Genetic counselling
Peace of mind when results are normal

WHEN IS THE NT SCAN DONE?
Ideal window: Between 11 weeks to 13 weeks + 6 days
Best performed before 14 weeks, as the NT space disappears afterward
